Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

A dedicated network of volunteers
Based in Washington, D.C., Rural Dog Rescue relies on a dedicated network of volunteers in the D.C. region and near shelters in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Our rescue is 100% volunteer-based with individuals assisting in the transport, adoption, and constant care of dogs without any compensation.
Rooting for the underdogs
We focus on efforts on shelters that euthanize over 70% of dogs or euthanize in 72 hours, and we rescue a range of breeds and sizes. Our commitment is to rescuing the “underdogs" - dogs that are often overlooked in shelters because they are dark-colored, hounds, sick, injured, or senior.
To date, RDR has placed more than 1,300 dogs in forever homes.
