Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The Iqaluit Humane Society is a community based, not-for-profit organization, established in 2007 to raise awareness about the humane treatment of domestic animals, assist the City of Iqaluit with animal abuse, abandonment and overpopulation issues, and promote responsible pet ownership. We are a volunteer based society focused on helping animals through rescue efforts and education programs. We do not receive government funding and rely on volunteers and generous donations from the community and others. The IHS is the first animal shelter in the territory of Nunavut. To date, we've saved over 2000 animals! Stray animals are caught by municipal enforcement and if not claimed in 72 hours they are released to the IHS. The city plays an important role and does an excellent job of releasing the animals to us, therefore allowing us to save them and ensuring them a new home. Through a generous partnership with Canadian North airlines, who donates cargo space, volunteers take part in "Dog Runs" in Iqaluit and take the animals every Tuesday to be sent "south" to our amazing partners at the SPCA of Western Quebec.
