About this Dog
He is Groot!!! A sweet and timid pup who is learning to love dog life. Sadly Groot lived outdoors on a chain or in a small pen with little to no attention and love, which he soooo craves. Everything indoors is new to this sweet boy. Groot is around 2 years old, 55 lbs., and a possible flat-coated retriever. While he is learning the ropes of being indoors, his new family must be very patient with him, because he is so eager to be your best bud. Doggie training class would most definitely benefit Groot. Sadly, so much in normal life scares him. With continued reassurance, he will eventually become confident, but he currently has to be coaxed into almost every situation. Once he is on a leash he walks well - no pulling and no prey drive. He does well once he is in a car, but is reluctant to get in. He’s learning that brushing his beautiful coat is a good thing. His paws and ears need some TLC from living outside and his foster mom is working on them. Groot is not a big barker he does huff when excited. He likes other dogs, but of course slow intros are recommended. He likes cats too. He was always fed on the ground or a paper plate, and is slowly learning to use a dog bowl. He has had some accidents in his foster home, so his potty training is a work in progress, and another thing he will need patience with. He is very timid at first but once he feels safe and comfortable he’s lovey-dovey and very excited to see his people - who wouldn’t be after being deprived of love and isolated so long? Due to his larger size and sometimes exuberance, if the home has kids they should be older as he could accidentally knock small kids over. Groot is also learning not to be mouthy with people, another reason small kids wouldn't be a good fit. He is doesn’t try to run away or dig out. He doesn't have recall yet but with training he will learn. He sleeps through the night on his bed or near it. He is left free-range inside the home and is not destructive. Groot thrives on love and attention after his life of neglect. This mostly laid back boy is not sure of toys yet but is inquisitive. He enjoys Benebones and has no aggression with toys or food. He is truly a dream dog despite his timid demeanor and needing to learn that his surroundings aren't a scary place and there are people in this world who will love and cherish him for the sweet boy he is. If the home has another dog, it would be better if that dog is not a senior, because Groot can be too much for a senior dog.
