About this Dog

Here's a revised version of your enquiry: --- **Tell us about your enquiry** Hello, We adopted a beautiful greyhound named Ed from Battersea 5 months ago. From the beginning, he bonded closely with my partner, but building trust with me took longer. Initially, we had a few incidents where he growled and ran towards me. However, I remained calm, gave him space, and over time, this approach helped us build some trust. Ed is wonderful with other people and dogs, which has been reassuring. Unfortunately, recent events beyond our control have caused a significant regression in his behavior. In June, we went away for a few days and left Ed with a dog sitter whom we had met beforehand. However, while we were away, she threw a large party at our flat, which exposed Ed to many unfamiliar people. Shortly after, we moved to a new flat, which understandably was a stressful experience for him. A week after the move, while Ed was playing in the garden and starting to settle in, he cut his leg badly on a piece of metal we hadn’t noticed on a step. The injury was severe, hitting an artery and requiring emergency surgery and frequent vet visits for a month. Thankfully, his leg has healed really well, but these experiences seem to have affected his trust in me. Recently, we had a frightening incident where Ed experienced extreme sleep startle. I called his name, thinking he was awake, but he must not have been fully awake. He jumped up, pinning me in the corner with his front paws while barking and growling in my face. Thankfully, he was muzzled, and he only stopped when my partner intervened. Although he improved slightly after this incident, he has since started growling at me seemingly out of nowhere. He often gives me little to no warning before getting up and running towards me, barking and growling. I’ve been trying to give him as much space as possible, but we’re reaching a point where we’re worried that we may not be the best fit for him. He’s a loving dog with other people and very responsive to training, but he’s stopped listening to me, which is concerning. While this isn’t happening all the time, it’s frequent enough to make me worry that we’re contributing to his anxiety rather than helping him. I genuinely believe Ed has the potential to be an amazing pet for another family or couple, but I’m not sure we can provide the care and stability he needs given our current lifestyle. The thought of returning him to Battersea is heartbreaking, especially knowing that his current behaviours might affect his chances of finding a new home. I believe he can be rehabilitated with the right care, but we’re not sure if we’re capable of providing that.
