About this Dog

About 2 months ago, a landlord who owns property down the street from us contacted my husband. My husband runs a dog care business out of our home, and the landlord found him online. The landlord’s tenants had been arrested three weeks prior (drug charges) and apparently these two dogs had been left in the home with no one knowing they were there. The landlord had evicted the tenants and was now going to clean out the property. He discovered the dogs. They were emaciated and their nails were curled under their feet. He called my husband and explained the situation and asked him to help. My husband has a soft heart for dogs, and he was sure it would be easy to get them back to good health and find them a home, so he said yes and took them in. (Had he consulted me, I would have vetoed, as I have already worked hard at placing dogs that were abandoned with us from boarding, and they were easier breeds to find homes for. He apparently had no idea how much effort that took, nor what it would cost to get initial vet care for these pups.) We named the male Dembe and the female Ashley Grace. We actually thought they were still puppies, but upon taking them to the vet, she looked at teeth and estimated 2-3 years of age. On the paperwork, she noted Ashley Grace as 4-6 years old, though she did not say that to me, so I’m unclear on that discrepancy. By the time we had gotten them to the vet (a week or so after getting them) they were already putting on weight, and the vet said they needed about 5 pounds more each. They have gained that by now, I am sure. Their bloodwork was good (no issues). They did have hookworm, which we treated them for. No heartworm, so we started them on preventative. They both have cracked teeth, and Ashley Grace’s two cracked teeth should be removed when she is spayed. She also has a Stage 3 heart murmur that needs further evaluation before surgery. They are sweet dogs who just want to be loved. Ideally they would go to a home together, but they have been fine spending time apart. Behavior-wise, they do not bite humans or bark. They have been fine with most other dogs. The one exception was a Frenchie who they fought with. They play with a lot of energy and are aggressive but not mean. They aren’t trying to hurt anyone, but just haven’t learned “no” when it comes to jumping on people for attention (especially Dembe) and pushing other dogs to play with them. We have some dogs in our business that play well with them, including a little Cavachon and an Australian Shepherd and a pit bull puppy (3 months old). But they also keep trying to engage dogs who don’t want to be engaged (timid dogs) and those dogs end up scared, so for the sake of these client dogs, we have to keep Dembe and Ashley Grace separate from them. It varies from day to day depending on the dogs being housed with us. They have been around cats and did fine with them, though it was only one night. They also have one night with older children. It was never our intention to keep these dogs, and we have tried many avenues to find them homes. Please help! They are great dogs, just need the right home!
